Treatments:
Horses have been subjected to various treatments. Some
methods are more difficult than others; some are more successful than
others.Ttreatments are: rubbing, blistering, firing, DMSO, which has a very poor
record in splint treatment, radiation, which is dangerous, and surgical removal, (please
see below) which is expensive.
Silver Splintex offers an inexpensive, topical, safe and
effective way to eliminate fresh splints, all horses, all ages in usually 12-15 days.
Available only from veterinarians. Contact your veterinarian.
Prevention management:
(1) Avoid excessive concussion and strain with young
horses.
(2) Select horses with proper conformation.
(3) Feed nutritionally balanced grains and forages.
Alfalfa is a good feed. However, it is best not to feed alfalfa to rapidly growing young
horses.
Splint management:
(1) Always give total rest to a horse with a fresh
splint.
(2) A horse with a hardened splint can follow his routine
if lameness is not present.
